Hello
isn t there a risk to damage your little finger ( and little nuckle ) when making a full power impact with the last three nuckles? Thanks a lot
Alejandro
you don’t HIT with the bottom three knuckles, you make contact with the entire fist, then “set off the grenade” by rolling from the top to the bottom knuckles.
I was taught that a cardinal sin was making a too tight fist. It causes tension in the fore-arm, and destroys proper alignment of the hand. It should be like a “sticky bomb”, finding and adhering to the target, before delivering power.
Which is where the esoteric subject of releasing chi begins I guess.
We once had a visiting instructor who showed us how unneccessary it was to even make a real fist to generate ‘deep’ penetrating punches, when combined with proper use of the bodies structure.
To demonstrate he just closed his fingers loosely enough that he could still poke his other index finger down into the gap. Then, standing by us each in turn he just pivoted a fraction, contacting us in the sternum. What was interesting is that he did it very slowly, but not ONE of us could help but take a step backward, despite doing our best to ’set anchors’. If he’d added speed, we’d have been knocked on our arses for sure!
He was frustratingly small too /~8
And he smiled a lot!
To paraphrase Bruce Lee
Before I began, a punch was just a punch. Once I trained, a punch became so much more. Now, a punch is just a punch.
Cheers

PS
I notice that when I make a tight fist, my thumb goes beyond that index finger, but when I just naturally ‘catch the butterfly’ , it stays where Jin suggests.
I found a really cool video on youtube which touches upon this. the instructor holds a real egg (not hard boiled) in his hand and demonstrates strikes.
He hits pretty hard from the looks of it all the while with the egg in his hand.
Its a really good vid check it out its called like chapter 22 bone on bone from a dvd called To Stand on A Stone.
I think you need to re-do this video. I don’t fully understand how to make your fist after watching it…
As for the Boxer fist; I dunno. When I punch my heavy bag with no gloves, it seems I can strike more powerfully with naked hands. But striking with gloves on, WC stands no chance whatsoever.
Do you know the padding of the gloves effects how the power is transferred? You can actually strike harder with gloves on; that’s a fact. But it ain’t a useful fact for the street!
But maybe you will not cut your opponents face more with gloves on, but KO is easier, I think.
Anyhow, I’m undecided as to how to strike best on the street; I think I’d naturally do a vertical style flat fist strike to protect my hands, but I’d be much more focused on elbows and throws for sure. I’d try to KO the opponent after he was grounded if I felt it be needed.

Thanks Jin.
What do you mean by “setting off the grenade”? Is it like a kind of corkscrew motion similar to the one used in a karate punch?
thats awesome!
im glad i was doing my fist in the right way but this explaination is so deep and simple at the same time…
thanks for sharing this knowledge Jin!

I was wondering if it would be benificial to practice wing chun punching with the egg in hand as well in order fine tune energy transfer in punches.

When I said:

I was reffering to the WC punch has more power with a naked fist, it seems (I’m yet concluded on the idea; I like weight!).
