Art Of Listening

This is one of my favorite clips from the “Kung Fu” series. The reason i like it so much is that it coincides with what makes my “method” of teaching and training unique. My primary goal is to “listen” rather than “talk”.

“listen” meaning developing sensitivity in your training, “talk” is all the punching, kicking, elbows, knees etc..

every martial arts instructor can teach the “talking” skills, but how many can really teach you high level “listening” skills? more and more i’m realizing how important it is to talk less and listen more, especially in my daily life. I’m hoping that martial arts practitioners realize that they will most likely never have to use their training to actually defend their lives from an attacker. and realize that martial arts practice is really just “life” practice, and that “you” will be your ultimate opponent. and to overcome daily struggles of “life” takes “listening” skills.

The film to me explains one of the essentials of the martial arts, the development of “Chi” as a result of daily inner awareness and growth.

That means, only if I inhabit my body, I’m deeply able to (like Bruce Lee said) “express myself as a human beiing through the martial arts”.

Chi toime means an inner force…a magnetic field that by the time begins to surround the body…in ancient times it was the basic for kung fu students to first develope their Inner-chi before starting the outside-finghting-arts.

But you’re right, the word is elusive and not easy to explain or to show…but it’s still the fundament of the martial arts.

i remember my girl friend thought i was nuts when i would talk about chi, then i took her hand one day and made it move with my chi, i said what did you feel and she said it perfect, she said “it was like a magnet, like to magnets coming together” now when i talk about chi and someone looks at me like i’m nuts, she is the first to go off, she is my biggest supporter.lol

i’ll try to explain my view on this with my story. my second year of high school i was about to join the martial arts club. i sat through a presentation (breaking boards) and i noticed the master not even use any sort of effort. its like he touched it with his fist and it snapped in half. my friend mentioned how focused his “chi” was. i basically interrogated him on the subject after that. i never joined this club, instead me and him met up outside the school to spar. i met a kid named david, who was intimately familiar with chi at the time. he told me to visualize my energy as a means of controlling it, telling me to have it explode out of me. as soon as i did this, i became faster, stronger, and swifter. i also became emotionally unstable for a few minutes because it was all so overwhelming. i became able to visualize my internal energy as well as the energy around me, and the rest is history, my friend. let me know if this helps at all.
