Swinging Gate Drill
Swinging Gate drill is a good way to practice when to use the lop sau hand. It also allows you to get alot of repetition. This is a very effective way to deal with a boxer’s parry hand, when they go to defend your punch. I use this alot during sparring, but make sure that you enter into “medium range” or else you leave yourself very vulnerable and overextended.

That was a great drill! Thanks! How would you apply this to work with the wooden dummy?

focus on must one of the arms and work the lap sau with the wooden arm to both the inside and outside your forearm, at the same time enter with good triangle footwork and follow with chain punches.

very nice drill sifu jin:) but i have just one kinda off topic question, do we really need to get hurt for us to learn and improve?

do you have to get hurt to learn? of course not, focus on the “quality” of your movements and learn to control your opponent, this way you don’t get hurt.

That’s AWESOME! My dummy is going to be paid for this week. $298 for a pvc dummy with a wooden standalone stand. Shipping is $74, but I can’t beat it. Anybody that needs a dummy, and doesn’t mind pvc vs wood I recommend chongmaster products.

oops…lap or lop means “grab”, sau or sao means “hand” so lap sau, lop sao together means “grabbing hand”, peace!

just wanted to make sure it was a transliteration matter

Hi Jin/Group,
We just began using this drill in our training. Really good way of combining footwork and coordination of both arms.
Rather than using a focus mitt and punching to the side of our partners, we stand square to each other and hit/pak towards the partners centreline. This we find gives both partners some benefits, rather than it really only benefiting one person at a time.
The ‘puncher’ gets to focus on what they should be, a person, and the ‘punchee’ gets to practice a good ‘pak’ wothout having to get all crossed up through working off to one side of their body. Of course this way we can’t extend/power up the strikes, but that’s ok.
I like the way you combined them into the ’swinging gate’ drill. I used to drill them individually, this is much more fun!
It’s popular with the lads (~:
