here's the thing about kimbo, there is a difference between a street fighter, and an athlete who fights in the ring. kimbo is a street fighter simple as that.

i know guys who can knock anybody out on the street, but put them in a ring with rounds and gloves? they can barely last 30 seconds. reason being, they usually dont have to fight longer than 30 seconds.

thats the type of fighter kimbo is. i really like him, ive watched interviews with him, he's very calm, and overall nice guy. he trains hard, and puts his soul into fighting, but sadly the transition between street fighting is ring fighting is not as smooth as everyone thinks.

this is gonna be a good fight, the first time they fought, i thought that Shogun's timing was right on with that counter round house kick, which ended up breaking Machida's ribs. but the problem was that Shogun didn't follow up immediately after it landed, which gave Machida time to reset, recover and land shots of his own. it was a very close fight, and when it's close, you have to score it for the champion. which is what happened.

this time, i think Shogun (who is a shoot fighter) will be more aggressive once he lands the counter punch or kick and try to keep the pressure on Machida.

i think that Machida's best strategy is to take the fight to the ground (machida is a BJJ blackbelt) and submit or ground & pound Shogun, this takes away Shogun's biggest strength which is his rear leg roundhouse kick.

this will make for an ugly fight for Machida, but i think it's his best strategy against a fast counter attacker like Shogun.

Hi Michael,

I know, you're right. I just thought the announcers were too pro-Shogun in UFC 104.

Shogun couldn't bring Machida down. I guess this is one of those 10% of the fights that doesn't go to the ground.

I thought Shogun had limited technique and couldn't land his devastating kicks. Machida showed he could face him left and right handed. If you study Machida's body and muscles you see that he is relaxed and not tense. Shogun's arm extension led to him being tight and tired (you can tell by his shaking out his arms in the last round). Though Shogun was in better condition I felt he wasted too much energy, could not deliver the combinations and was not able to engage confidently. The strikes he landed were wild and lucky - definitely not well delivered or timed right.

Both are well trained and skilled. But I like Machida. But yes, Shogun may do better this time around.

3 Chopsticks Wong

Hey Chopsticks. I'm a Machida fan as well, but I can't say with a strait face that he schooled Shogun. That fight was so back and forth, it really could have gone to either fighter. If last fight proved anything, it's that Shogun is one of the only fighters out there that can deal with Machida's striking range. Machida's BJJ blackbelt doesnt really mean a whole lot since Shogun also has one (no one is taping in this fight). Clearly Machida will tweek a few things for the upcoming fight, but Shogun is also gonna come in with a new game plan...hopefully as effective and exciting as the last one. I do give a slight advantage to Machida, but I definitely will not be surprised if Shogun takes it.

My money is on Machida again.

His hard core karate training, accuracy and discipline added to his BJJ mat skills. UFC 104 showed Machida's experienced skill level that Shogun just kept missing his strikes by inches and was wasting energy. Add to that Shogun's failure to stop so many front kicks allowing them to land with force without even an attempt to protect, block or capture the leg. Machida schooled him and will do so again.

UFC 113 is coming up and that means the long anticipated rematch between Machida and Shogun. Aside from Pacquiao/Mayweather (which may never happen) this is the fight I've really been looking forward to. I already have my predictions, but I really want to get a discussion going. Who do you think will win? How do you think he will win? What other fights are you really looking forward to seeing on this card (Koscheck vs. Daily should be a crazy one, plus Kimbo is fighting which is... amusing)?

Well, I'll bust the mood straight up; I don't like steriotype MMA or UFC. It's not street fighting, so being the "most realistic fighting sport" really is worth nothing. As for a sport, it's uncivilized. They lack style and have no sense of tradition (which is something that gives real depth to our TMAs).

I liked Kimbo back when he was fist fighting on the street. They were some really good clips to watch. Some of the guys he fought seemed less skilled than me, and, given my size, I would have fought him on the street back then that style and maybe done alright. But it's a shame doing that kind of thing does not attract enough money for him...

The thing is, on the street, he was pretty much a Boxer. So, wanting to go into sport, why did he choose MMA? Because he would have done poorly in professional Boxing and not made any splash. Same with K-1 fighting; he would have been owned. It's a shame, but he had to go into the least specialist sport because that's where the finer points are much less challenged, and also the money, of course; they could sell him... the UFC, clearly, is where he could go directly to the top (that doesn't say a lot about the sport).

Oh well. My thoughts. I just really dislike the UFC and it's propaganda and arrogant fighters.

The first round was not very exciting as both stayed defensiv and neither of them wanted to make the first serious attack.

But Kimbo wasn´t bad on the ground and overall I think it was fair that Kimbo won by desicion...

just saw the kimbo slice vs roy nelson video on the "ultimate fighter", it was pretty sad, Kimbo pretty much got pwned as soon as he was taken down. Dana White tried to "talk up" Kimbo's performance, of course, because he wants to keep him in the show, to improve his ratings, he's not stupid.

but no matter what he says or tries to convince the public, Kimbo did horrible, and he's very lucky that Roy Nelson doesn't have a vicious "ground and pound". Seriously, Kimbo would get hurt bad trying to compete against the elite UFC fighters.

We'll just have to wait and see what happens...

i agree with both of you, his last fight really showed him and the world how lacking his ground game really was. i think this really openned his eyes and showed the weakness'es in his game. the big question will be his age. but we'll see how he does in the UFC reality show, but honestly, i think the show will be heavily rigged in his favor so that he gets the UFC contract. Dana White is no dummy, he'll make sure to squeeze as much cash out of him as possible while the hype on him is still very good.

He has a strong body and it will be hard to knock him out while he is standing.

If he can adjust to the ground fighting I can´t see why he shouldn´t do well.
