There are 3 phases of a fight:  Free Movement, The Clinch, and The Ground.  90% of all real fights end up on the ground.  To be a well rounded warrior, one should not only be well versed in each phase, but be able to control the fight such that the fight is limited to the phase wherein lie your strengths and your opponents weaknesses…

I have read that 90% figure thrown out a lot.  Just curious if that has been the experience of a lot of the folks checking out this blog or if that was something a Gracie jujitsu exponent just pulled out of the air and it sounded right to everyone.

It hasn't been my experience but maybe there are a lot more judo and ju-jitsu and wrestling/grappling types out there in the street?  I have never heard of more than a couple of dozen players per class per grappling type school so where does everyone get this experience?

Oh, I'm not looking to start an argument.  Just curious where this 90% of all real fights end up on the ground figure originated.

There is such a thing as a standup submission and certainly in a closed in area – hallway, elevator, in between cars – it would be difficult to throw your opponent to the ground.  I have fought in those areas because that is where you can get mugged.

I do agree that grappling should be a part of a well rounded fighter's training regimen.

"90% of real fights end up on the ground" because somebody gets knocked the hell out.

I agree that gound game is importan the army taght me BJJ wich is awsome on the ground how ever the ground is the worst place to be in a multiple opponent situation  becaus while your wrestling for the lock the other attackers have free rain to rain punishment
